So this is happening not far from me.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Lovely.
The irony is that the lake is substantially cleaner than it has been in a long time (closed a steel plant on its shores in the 90's)
The bloom is already starting to go down but its pretty deadly right now, creating neurotoxis and what not.

Damn, the fish kill is going to be pretty terrible. Can they at least clean up the surface or do the lack the tools?

To be fair, I don’t think anyone really eats the fish from the lake...it has a bit of a rep as I was saying...but its a very popular boating area and its connected to a lot of irrigation in the area.

Gizmodo has a pretty interesting piece on the algae bloom. If the government weren’t in the pocket of big agriculture, this might not have happened. Oh, and they’re trying to blame Obama. Because politics.

On the Utah one? Utah has cracked down on agriculture and industrial waste into the lake in a big way, its actually much cleaner than it used to be...by a lot.

Ah, yeah I read that. Yeah in contrast to Flordia, Utah has much tighter controls on industry and agriculture surrounding the lake with the goal to restore the lake from years of neglect and abuse. We are on the right track, but this still happens from time to time.
We used to have “ski the scum” t-shirts, but I can’t find them now.

I am interested to see the chemical report.
Usually local industry is allowed to dump a certain amount of material into the water system, but phosphates, nitrogen and some other materials are highly monitored as they can create a massive algae bloom.
I did some research for a degree on the Tampa Bay water system and how it went from terrible to not so bad based on controlling the phosphates.
Companies will be fined per day based on their non-compliance. And it can be insane after a few days of fines.

I wish I could point you to some data, I know that they have been trying very hard over the years to regulate agricultural and industrial runoff in an attempt to revive the lake.

In the time lapse video you see people swimming in it in the distance, is that okay?!

100% not okay, 100 people have been treated for the symptoms of the toxins that come from this sludge. I guess it kinda rolled in fast like so people didn’t know. The entire lake is closed right now.

I’m pretty much over any fresh water body of water, all these reports of toxins and flesh/brain eating bacteria is nuts. Some girl in Texas died a couple of months ago after some bacteria went into her nose, got to her brain and she as dead in a week.
Fuck that. I’ll take a chlorinated pool.
